Barn Buddies is a new project intended to help those hard to place cats get out of the shelter and into a suitable environment. Because this involves placing cats outside, Barn Buddies is inactive during the colder months. In fact, we're kicking it off now in order to better organize our efforts in the spring of 2010. We're also looking for a volunteer project coordinator... check it out here.
Occasionally the Baltimore Humane Society receives cats that, for various reasons, cannot live as indoor companion pets. These may be under-socialized cats that prefer little to no human contact or they may be friendly cats that just cannot adjust to an in-home environment. These cats are candidates for our Barn Buddies Program and will do best in a home on a farm, horse stable, warehouse, or other suitable outdoor location.
All cats in the Barn Buddies program are spay/neutered, vaccinated and micro-chipped. Since each cat is unique, Baltimore Humane is not able to guarantee cat’s temperament or personality. It will depend on the individual cat on whether the cat seeks human contact once placed in that environment.
Which cats are considered for the Barn Buddies program:
- Friendly cats that have spent their life outdoors and can't adapt to indoor life.
- Semi-feral adults too shy and fearful of people who much prefer the company of other cats and animals.
- Friendly cats with litter-box issues, making them unsuitable for house life.
What is required for a Barn Buddies adoption:
- Adopters must have safe, permanent shelter with one or more areas of weather-proof covering, plus a continuous supply of fresh food and water.
- Adopters must also agree to provide veterinary care for the cats if they should require it in the future.
- Adopters must ensure that the cats are given time to acclimate to their new environment and do not run away.
Our “Barn Buddies” will depend on you for basic care for their overall health. Your adoption of a Barn Buddy is a life-long commitment of time, affection, and responsibility.
Please contact the Baltimore Humane Society to learn more about how to qualify for a free barn cat adoption, we do require that you complete a one page application and agree to the terms of the “Barn Buddies” Program.
Do you already have barn cats and need some help?
Let's do a swap! We'll sterilize and vaccinate up three of your barn cats, but you'll have to take an extra one home with you! More info coming soon...
