An Estimated 54% of Dogs and Cats in the United States are Overweight or Obese Is your cat a part of these sad statistics? Join us for our three month long Phat Cat Fitness Camp! Seven of our most stout cats have been chosen to participate in this special program designed to get excess weight off. Follow along at home with our campers here at Baltimore Humane Society. Meet the campers, all wonderful cats waiting to be adopted. You'll be learning all about diet, nutrition, exercise, and general health and fitness for your furry felines. Everything we do here at Camp you can easily do at home. So join in the fun and follow along! We'll be showing videos, doing live chats, doing demonstrations, and even asking for your weight loss ideas and questions. Why does weight matter in cats? Obesity is no laughing matter! Extremely common in household cats, it can predispose them to developing serious health issues. Overweight cats are more likely to develop: -Painful arthritis -Depression -Heart disease -Breathing difficulty -Diabetes -Liver disease -Bladder cancer Phat Cat Fitness Camp Overview: Phat Cat Fitness Camp focuses on a special diet and exercise program. First we transition our campers' menu over to Prescription Diet r/d, a prescription food that is low in fat and calories and high in fiber. It is made specifically for safe weight loss. They are also each getting an individual assessment by a Purrrrr -sonal Trainer to determine what types of exercise they prefer and need in order to get back into shape! Camp will be in session over the next several months to ensure that the weight is lost very slowly and the exercise is increased very gradually. Rapid weight loss in cats is extremely dangerous and must be done slowly. Check back and we’ll keep you posted on their weight loss progress. Camp Accommodations: Phat cat campers will be housed together in a camper cabin. Cabins are converted B'more Humane Cat Communal Rooms. Living together they’ll be able to encourage each other to eat right and be more active daily. Their Phat Cat Camp Cabin will be set up to promote extra play and movement with special donated furniture and toys developed specifically to entice activity. Our campers each currently weigh approximately 15 pounds. We're striving to get them down to a healthier, trim 11-12 pounds.
