The Baltimore Humane Society understands that circumstances may arise that require individuals to relinquish their companion animals. We strongly encourage that before relinquishing your pet to our facility you explore the possibility of finding your animal a new home through your personal networks of friends, co-workers, family and acquaintances.

If you're having behavioral issues and are seeking to relinquish your pet, you may wish to contact an animal behaviorist or professional trainer prior to relinquishing your pet to the Humane Society. Often times, behavioral problems can be resolved with a little patience and creativity...

If you are unable to locate a home for your animal, and you would like to relinquish your pet to the Humane Society please read our guidelines carefully. Surrendering an animal is an important decision for both you and for the Humane Society.

If you have found a stray, contact your local animal control agency for more information:

Baltimore City Animal Control... 410.396.4688

Abandoning an animal is against Baltimore County Law! Animals abandoned on the Humane Society's property are required by Baltimore County law to be turned over to Baltimore County Animal Control. Leaving an animal on our property (with or without information about the animal) is considered abandonment and the animal will be taken to animal control. Please bring the animal to our facility during normal surrender hours.

Surrendering an animal to the Baltimore Humane Society, or to any animal facility, is a very important decision. Please consider your options prior to contacting us. We will help how ever we can! Please read the following guidelines:

  • You must be the legal owner of the animal and have had the animal in your custody for a minimum of thirty days.
  • The Humane Society accepts pets by appointment only. Please call 410.833.8848 ext. 0 to schedule an appointment.
  • You will be asked to provide us with any previous medical history and to complete a personality profile for each animal.
  • The Humane Society receives no public funding and survives on the generosity of caring individuals. To compensate, the Humane Society does charge the following relinquishment fees:

Litter of kittens or puppies under 3 months of age: waived
    Cat or small animal: $35
    Dog: $45

The relinquishment fee helps cover a small portion of the cost to care for the animal while it is at our facility.

Deciding when to let a pet go can be a very difficult decision to make. We understand how painful loss can be. The Humane Society provides humane euthanasia service to the public at our animal center.

Individuals seeking euthanasia services are asked to call 410.833.8848 ext. 0 to make an appointment. Our fees for euthanasia are the same as our relinquishment fees:

Cat or small animal: $35
Dog (regardless of size): $45

In addition, individuals may secure cremation services from the Humane Society and based on the following fees:

Type Communal Private
Cat or small animal:
$30 $100
Dog (0 - 50lbs): $45 $115
Dog (> 50lbs): $60 $150

At this time, all euthanasia services provided by the animal center prohibit attendance of the owner.
